Music Therapy

What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to promote, maintain and restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. In music therapy, a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program addresses individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship.

Music Therapy is a well-established allied health profession similar to occupational therapy and speech/language therapy. Music therapy can address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals from birth through end-of-life care, and also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Because music is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are often possible. Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.
